SE Minnesota, ravaged by flooding in mid-August needs your help as they continue to recover and rebuild. An appeal from the SE MN Area Labor Council has been sent to labor organizations in Minnesota but aid to our friends and neighbors is not limited to any organization.
Please do what you can.
I have downloaded the pdf file of the items needed in the communities and it can be accessed at my Boxnet widget in the right column.
Peace & solidarity,
On behalf of the union families living in Southeast Minnesota, we are asking for your help. On August 18-19, 2007 our communities were hit hard by a disastrous flood. In seven counties many homes were destroyed, people were hurt, and lives were changed forever.
The Southeast Area Labor Council (SEALC) has been in constant communications with the organizations giving assistance to the flood victims over the past several weeks. Many union members have already donated their time and money to the efforts here in Southeastern Minnesota, and we appreciate your help. Now, we have to tell you that the recovery effort is a long, slow process and many families here still need your help.
Here are three ways that you can help:
- 1. Help fill the Teamsters Truck with rebuilding materials for families in Stockton, Winona County, Rushford and Houston. Weare collecting items on Monday October 8thfrom 7:30 AM to 6 PM at the Rochester Plumber & Pipefitters Hall at 1470 Industrial Dr. Members of Teamsters Local #120 will drive the donated materials to the affected towns on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Please see the attached flyer for details.
- 2. Help by making a financial contribution. The SE MN Area Labor Council is collecting monetary donations to be given to the cities that have set up funds to directly help their residents and communities in the long-term rebuilding process. Please send individual and Local Union checks to the SE Area Labor Council 11-4th St. SE , Rochester MN 55904 (Write 2007 Flood Relief on the memo line.)
- 3. Help with the work of rebuilding. Skilled volunteers are needed for Union Volunteer Days, Saturday Oct. 13 and Sunday Oct. 14. The work includes repairing basement cracks, framing, installing windows and doors, insulating, sheet-rocking, mudding and taping walls, texturing ceilings, etc. We will meet at the Rochester Central Labor Center (11-4th St SE, Rochester) in the back parking lot at 9 AM both days. We will car pool to our work site(s) and return to Rochester by 5 PM. Please look at the volunteer requirements on the Olmsted County United Way website http://www.uwolmsted.org/.
- 4. Please notify SEALC staffer Liz McLoone of how many of your union members will be volunteering. Liz will coordinate with the United Way. You can reach Liz at firstname.lastname@example.org or 507-254-9249. RSVP for your unions’ volunteers by Oct. 10th.
Thank you in advance for your commitment to helping those who need it most during this time. If you have any questions regarding this program, please contact the SE ALC Field Representative Liz McLoone at 507-254-9249.
