Today it was announced that the Association of Bloggers Who Live in the SW Corner of Minnesota and Live in a Corner House and Blog From a Corner of That House, has awarded CornerHouseComments its prestigious Braggadocio Award.

CHC had this to say:

“I was stunned! It is a real honor to be recognized by your peers, even if it is self serving. The Braggadocio Award is probably as prestigious as the over 120 awards handed out by American Meat Institute to its membership. I’m sure that the detractors will be coming out of the woodwork now, saying that CornerHouseComments doesn’t post enough and that what I post is crap. Just look at Quality Pork Processors, Inc. in Austin, MN. They were given an Award of Honor by the AMI recently and now people are bringing up stuff like they are dragging their feet on taking care of their employees sickened by vaporized pig brains. Jeez, it’s hard being on top.”

On November 28 two workers died as a result of an explosion and fire at an Enbridge Energy oil pipeline terminal in Clearbrook, MN.

On December 1st, just two days later, at the Marathon Oil refinery in St. Paul Park, MN an explosion and fire at a 10,000 barrel tank claimed the life of another worker.

Our sympathy goes out to the families and coworkers of all three employees who gave their lives for their job.

It is frustrating and disappointing that with the technology available and the really deep pockets of the oil industry that these tragedies still happen. WorkdayMinnesota has a story about oil refinery hazards and the efforts of the United Steelworkers union to raise awareness and encourage action to prevent further tragic accidents. The USW recently released a report from an extensive survey they did about Process Safety Management in the oil industry. While I must confess I have not read the entire 108 page report yet it shows the need for more emphasis on the industry to comply with the PSM standard that was implemented in 1992 by OSHA. Progress has been slow since the 2005 Texas City, Texas refinery blast that killed 15 and injured over 100 people. The USW report shows that the lessons learned from Texas City are not being widely implemented.

The Sky Blue Waters Report, a blog written by Tom Elko, has an informative piece about oil pipeline expansions and safety.

There is much more to write on this subject but I will get to that later.

Good night!

It was back in April that Representative Dennis Kucinich introduced H. Res. 333 , the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney.Although hearings have been blocked in the Judiciary Committee by Speaker Pelosi, Rep. Kucinich has announced that on Tuesday, November 6 he will use his right of personal privilege to force a floor vote.  He fully expects a motion to table so it is important to contact your representative in the House and strongly urge them to support H. Res. 333. This will allow debate and put the members of the House of Representatives on record on the impeachment issue.

The following telephone numbers can be used to contact your representative:

800-828-0498

800-862-5530

800-833-6354

George McGovern’s comments about the Vice President were the subject of a previous post here.

The Democratic leadership should allow this vote to happen! Many of the Democrats will say that it will take up precious time when they could be working on other legislation. They need to review what we have lost in freedoms, liberties, and precious resources and what we will lose by allowing Cheney and the Bush administration to continue to operate unchecked.

Here is the video of Rep. Kucinich explaining the upcoming vote.
